Swedish Massage

Massage dates back thousands of years, perhaps to the beginning of mankind, because being touched is a basic need of human beings. The manual techniques of massage were passed down from generation to generation in many countries, respected as a profession, and widely used in spas and retreats throughout the world

The techniques and skills have been identified, analyzed, and perfected through the years.. Now a practitioner, with skill, control, and purpose, applies broad flowing strokes (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), joint movement or percussion (tapotement), active/passive range of motion (friction), vibration, stretching, superficial hot and cold applications, acupressure, and Shiatsu, that produce physiological as well as physical effects. The therapist may use their hands, forearms, elbows, or feet for the purpose of therapeutic massage.

A good massage reduces mental and physical fatigue, increases circulation, releases muscular tension and stress, improves joint mobilization, and calms the nervous system. It creates a balance of physical, spiritual, and mental well being to promote healing.

Massage is designed for your comfort and benefit to promote relaxation, and to promote a general sense of well-being. It improves function of the circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems and is often reported to improve the speed the body recovers from injury and illness.

Things to consider when looking for a Massage Therapist:

After checking certification, convenience, location, price, background, reputation, and all normal business decisions, think carefully about what else is important to you in this regard. Massage is a fabulous treatment and should really be considered a necessity rather than a luxury, if finances so allow. However, it is an exchange of energy with another person, so it is important to make a good choice.

Cleanliness is at the top of the list.

Select a therapist with good vibrations. Someone who enjoys life, who likes people and sees the best in them. (This is not the time to take on the energy of gossip, criticism, complaining. Your mind and body are open, you want them filled with good vibrations.)

Someone who loves what they are doing. You can tell the minute they put their hands on you whether they love what they are doing, or if it just a job. Choose the enthusiasm.

Someone who is friendly, but professional. (Friendly before and after the massage, but
professional during the massage, allowing you to relax your mind as well as your body.)

Someone who chats during a treatment is not thinking about you, but entertaining themselves. They should be focusing on what they are doing. If it is just 'routine', then look elsewhere. Don't hesitate to ask for quiet except for information about your body or
instructions to move your body.

You want a therapist who asks what kind of a massage you feel like today and offers some suggestions.

If the touch is too light or too deep, feel free to express that. Remember, you are paying the therapist for this service, and it should be to your liking.

The music should also be to your liking. If not, perhaps you could take the music with you that you would like to hear during your massage.

Mutual respect is important in any relationship. Confidentiality is critical. So, make careful choices. You will benefit from massages in many ways.
